Patty, her daughter, Jasmine and grandson, Amir (2) are taking a huge step towards a safe and stable future. They will soon achieve the strength and independence that comes with affordable homeownership.
Over the past 29 years, Patty has worked as a cosmetologist. She has even worked at the same salon for 16 years. Despite her consistency and dedication to her career, she is not able to afford a conventional mortgage on her single income.
Facing the affordable housing crisis, Patty took action to provide a better life for herself, as well as her daughter and grandson. When she became a grandmother, she realized that she wanted to create a gathering place for her family. She wanted something that, as she says, “will be my own.” Her grandmother always hosted family holiday dinners, and Patty wants to adopt that tradition for her family now. After living in the same rental for 19 years, Patty knows it is time to build a stable, affordable home for her family.
Now a year into the Knoxville Habitat program, Patty is working to complete her sweat equity hours through attending budget classes and building her own home alongside volunteers. She has loved meeting nice people with the same goals as herself.
With your support and generosity, Patty will soon own a home to continue cherished family traditions for generations.
